What to Do When Your Dishwasher Is Not Filling with Water

If you’ve found your dishwasher not filling with water, you’re definitely not alone. It’s annoying to open the door and realize everything inside is still bone-dry. The good news is, there are several common causes you can troubleshoot yourself before calling in a pro.

Check the water supply

Sometimes the simplest explanation is the one that solves the problem. Open the cabinet under your kitchen sink and locate the dishwasher’s water supply valve. Make sure it’s turned on all the way. If it’s partially closed, your dishwasher may only receive a trickle of water, or nothing at all.

  • Ensure the hose running to your dishwasher isn’t bent or pinched.
  • Look for any obvious leaks around the supply valve.

If you do see signs of leaking, you may need to tighten connections or replace a faulty hose.

Inspect the float switch

The float switch is a small mechanism inside your dishwasher’s tub that basically tells the system when to stop filling with water. If gunk or mineral buildup causes the float to get stuck, your dishwasher will think it’s already full.

  1. Locate the float near the bottom of your dishwasher’s interior.
  2. Gently move it up and down, feeling for any resistance.
  3. Clean off any visible debris to keep it from sticking.

Examine the door latch

The door latch ensures your dishwasher is securely closed so it can start the wash cycle. If this latch isn’t engaging, the dishwasher might not fill.

  • Check if any broken plastic or leftover food debris is blocking the latch.
  • Listen for a “click” when you close the door.

No click could mean the door latch is damaged or misaligned, so the machine won’t get the go-ahead to fill with water.

Look at the inlet valve

When the dishwasher receives a signal to fill, the inlet valve opens so water can rush in. If this valve is clogged or defective, your dishwasher might stay empty.

  • Locate the inlet valve just behind the lower access panel at the front.
  • Turn off power to the dishwasher at the breaker, then inspect the valve for debris.
  • If it’s visibly damaged or worn, a replacement could be the fix.

Investigate electrical issues

In some cases, it’s not a plumbing problem at all. A malfunctioning float switch or inlet valve may not receive the correct voltage. Sometimes a blown fuse or a loose wire can stop your dishwasher from filling.

  • Consult your owner’s manual to identify relevant fuses or wiring connections.
  • If you’re not comfortable checking electrical components, call a qualified repair service.

Always remember to unplug or switch off the breaker before diving into any electrical work. Your safety is everything.

Final thoughts

A dishwasher that won’t fill can be frustrating, especially when you’re juggling a million other tasks. By checking the water supply, float switch, door latch, inlet valve, and basic electrical components, you can often pinpoint (and sometimes fix) the culprit on your own. If nothing seems to solve the problem, or if you’re unsure about doing a repair by yourself, you can always reach out to professionals for help.
